SPINN in Norwegian
We are currently working on translating the SPINN web page from English to Norwegian, so for a short time you might find both languages ere. SPINN's primary market is in Norway and we have therefore decided it would be most natural to focus on communication in Norwegian. Our projects will also have short english summaries, and an english summary in the About SPINN page. We hope our english followers will continue to follow along on Instagram and Facebook despite the change.

SPINN partner Leif D. Houck to supervise new PhD program at NMBU

Silvie Le Muzic, former Chief Adviser for Arkitektbedriftene, is the first PhD candidate in a new industry PhD program at NMBU, with SPINN partner Leif Houck as her supervisor. Eight companies within the real estate industry, architectural industry, consulting engineers and contractors have joined forces to support this new program and  research success factors in building processes.

"New knowledge from this study will identify the most important success criteria for optimal collaboration in building projects. Understanding the potential and responsibility for each building phase will increase effectiveness and flexibility for all involved, creating value for the customer, users and society" says PhD candidate Le Muzic.

Increasing complexity of construction projects, the requirements of new technologies, faster deliveries and new forms of collaboration challenges all industries in construction and property industry. Resulting in a need to supply more efficiently and thus require new interaction.

SPINN Arkitekter are excited about this important new research and the results it may provide.

SPINN says yes to relevant experience!

Partner James Dodson has joined the on-going debate about public procurement and the sometimes strict requirements for relevant experience within different project types. In response to a previous debate article by Geir Brendeland, Dodson rebukes the catch 22 notion that "it's impossible to design schools if you haven't already built one".

SPINN is proof that it is indeed possible for new companies to break through in niche markets, like schools. Founded in 2012, SPINN now has 1 completed school, 2 schools opening in 2017 and two more currently on the drawing boards. However, getting there has been a process of long-term strategic planning over a period of 8 or more years.

SPINN was founded with a goal of becoming best at programming and designing new schools. We believe our experience, gained over the years by designing and building innovative new school projects, close involvement with teachers and administration underway, while at the same time performing academic research on schools and universal design.

Why shouldn't this experience count positively when public clients are going to choose the architect for their new school? Should architects only compete on price? No thanks!

Gilles & Cecilie win public art commission in Randaberg

The Norwegian-French artist duo has their base in London whilst working across the globe on a series of international projects. "The Alphabet Project" is the name of their winning submission for Harestad school and Randaberg culture scene. This is how they describe their art project:

´Art should explore and develop relations between art and library in a new and unexpected way. The overarching idea with the art for Harestad school and Randaberg culture scene is that it should arouse curiosity and contribute to new conversations and reflections.'

SPINN Arkitekter partner James Dodson says "Their artwork will be a major contribution to the new school and cultural stage. It will engage the students experience of their new school with a series of pieces featuring uplifting statements and fantastic colors. We couldn't have asked for a better submission to the competition".

AHH Healthcare Facility Schematic Design Delivered

SPINN Arkitekter and Architectopia have completed the schematic design phase for our new healthcare facility in Bjørkelangen. Aurskog-Høland Helsehus is a new municipal healthcare facility that includes a wide range of services over 3 floors. Services include emergency room and drop-in doctors office with 4 short-stay hospital beds in the first floor. The second floor contains physical therapy, regional dentist services, maternity- and infant services. The third floor is a flexible office floor designed to cater to a wide spectrum of services ranging from mental health, preventative information, and a base for home nursing care.

Adjacent to the brick clad healthcare facility are 15 new serviced apartments for the elderly clad in untreated fir. Both buildings have been designed with cross-laminated-timber (massivtre) construction and strict environmental specifications for materials and energy use. Tender documents for construction have been published on DOFFIN and TED with the goal of signing a contract with the general contractor before summer and construction start in the fall.

Norway Needs Good Temporary Refugee Housing Solutions, NOW!

On the Arkitektnytt webpage, Tor Inge Heimdal of NAL says "Architects are well trained to come up with new ideas and be creative in a short period of time. This is not a quick fix, it's a smart fix. We are needed". When the Minister of Modernization and Municipalities, Jan Tore Sanner, called a meeting to ask for advice about how to house the influx of refugees, architects were not invited to take place. Norway will likely need to house up to 39,000 refugees in 2016-2017. NAL's Heimdal thinks architects are the ones who can help come up with the ideas necessary to make this possible. We agree!

SPINN Arkitekter and our officemates TOPIC were recently asked by Boligbygg Oslo KF, the Oslo Municpial Housing Authority, to illustrate temporary refugee housing solutions in Oslo. We gladly participated in a two-day charrette that explored the potential of 4 potential undeveloped sites in Oslo. The locations and configurations ranged from urban infil to suburban sites with an array of possible layouts.

The team's response was heavily based upon TOPIC's earlier research into temporary housing in Oslo that explored the re-use of shipping containers and off the shelf building-site modules to create livable spaces on underutilized sites around the city. A theme that is even more applicable to the current refugee housing crisis.

We hope to see more municipal interest in good solutions to these problems. Norway and Oslo need to take positive action to supply humane and worthy housing for those in need. While you are here, please consider a donation to SPINN's refugee charity of choice, the Norwegian Red Cross via NERD AID.

Architectural VR Visualization Demo with Kim Baumann Larsen

Today SPINN Arkitekter hosted a lunch presentation with our old friend (and visualization legend) Kim Baumann Larsen. Equipped with two Samsung mobile phones and VR-Gear headsets, we were treated to a well-informed discussion of the state of VR Visualization in architecture and a hands-on demonstration of what cutting-edge architectural VR looks like in a mobile format. The results were impressive!

"Architecture has a significant potential to use this technology because good VR gives a feeling of togetherness (PRESENCE) and the ability to understand space and sizes in a way that can only be compared to being present in the finished building." - Kim Baumann Larsen

Judging from the scenes we witnessed today, we agree. SPINN looks forward to further experimentation and to seeing some SPINN Arkitekter projects in stereo VR!

SPINN running for mens health!

Today, architects from SPINN Arkitekter, along with family and friends ran and walked in the Barteløpet 2105 , a fun run to kick off MOVEmber that was initiated and co-organized by our own Daniel Barth. Sporting our painted, glued, and drawn on 'stashes the office boys and girls had a good time while contributing to a good cause.

Great job all!  Tomorrow it's time to shave and start growing our MO's.

Designing the Classroom of the Future

At SPINN Arkitekter we are constantly working to innovate and push school design forward. Our main goal is to create fantastic educational spaces that inspire and support both teachers and students alike. We believe that modern teaching areas should consist of a series of flexible and varied spaces that allow for modern learning activities and tools. As with all of our educational projects there is also a focus on excellent daylight, views, high ceilings, and a great indoor climate.

SPINN partner James Dodson recently presented our visions for the teaching areas of Baksalen 1-7 School to the teachers, administrators, and the building owner in Hammerfest. 5 unique proposals were presented, representing a spectrum of possibilities from more traditional classroom + group rooms to new and innovative solutions that would provide a greater variety of spaces. Instead of a "one student, one desk" paradigm, we are working on spaces that would allow students to work in many different ways at learning stations, in groups, at a table, in a fatboy, or a small classroom amfitheater.

The final solutions have not been decided upon, but we were happy to discover that our user groups were positive exploring some of the more creative and varied solutions. SPINN will continue to develop these concepts throughout the schematic design phase and into detail design. We look forward to the further evolution of the classroom, and to seeing the inspiring ways in which the teachers of Hammerfest will put their new school to use!
